In Windsor v. United States, the SCOTUS ruled that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, which denied legally married same-sex the same protections and responsibilities of heterosexual married couples, is unconstitutional. By striking down Section 3 of DOMA, the Supreme Court has affirmed by a 5-4 vote that all loving and committed couples who marry deserve equal legal respect and treatment. The ruling on DOMA does not legislate same-sex marriage, but it does mean that in states where same-sex marriage is already legal, the federal government will recognize those marriages in the same way that they recognize different-sex marriages.
